The day has dawned sunny and bright, but other than that I feel like a broken record... Still buried deep in LDAP configurations and mapping out the IBM tutorial that will detail my Address Book project. I'm also trying to get ahead on my weekly workload as we're leaving early tomorrow afternoon and I'll lose a day and a half in transit back to Saskatoon.

I "frittered away" two whole hours last night tweaking and toying with my KDE desktop. I compiled and installed the Mosfet-Liquid stuff, found some very cool wallpaper, and stumbled across a hack for the Kicker Panel that adds translucency) (available from KDE-Look.org for anyone so inclined). No, not exactly what I'd call a productive use of my time, but it was fun to get away from serious writing and research for a bit.

Gotta run... so much to do, so little time...

I should just create an embedded block of code I can insert while we remain here in Vancouver: Weather, rain. Forecast, more rain. Bleh. One good thing about visiting Vancouver is it serves to remind me why I live in Saskatchewan. The winters may be cruel at times, but at least we experience summer.

Yesterday was long, but productive. I spent the greater part of the day (and long into the night) hacking OpenLDAP configuration files, exploring the bounds of schemas, and directing the knowledge gained into something tangible. I'm getting there. I should have a functional LDAP directory service running by the weekend, complete with addressbook functionality. Meaning my email client can do name/email address lookups using the LDAP directory rather than using a propriety, local address book. Theoretically, the service should work with any email client that offers directory-based address searches. I know Mulberry does; I've yet to look under the hood of KMail.

Lots of news on the Microsoft "Palladium" issue of late. ZDNet's Matt Loney has a good commentary up on the topic this morning. It's worth a read.

And I stumbled across this FAQ late last night; useful for anyone trying to configure a Dell notebook for Linux-based APM, wireless, etc. I also discoverd this GUI driven directory management interface. I haven't yet got it to work with my OpenLDAP installation yet, but in all fairness, I started trying about midnight and I was definitely not at my sharpest. In addition, I had been hacking on my LDAP configuration for most of the day, so the problem is likely on my end rather than the program's. Today's project is to move all my knowledge gained yesterday to the fresh RH 7.3 server I have running in the other room, plug in the appropriate configurations, and try to bring up a clean implementation from scratch. More as events unfold...
